Sandrone is the Barolo producer whose wines most remind us of Burgundy. The suave, seamless texture, fine tannins and depth of flavour of these Barolos makes them some of the most sought-after wines of the region. With age, they are so polished, so pure, so seductive. Sandrone uses 500lt barrels (typically only 10% - 20% new), picks at very low yields and bottles his wines before they lose their freshness or purity. His wines are wonderfully intense and vibrant with ripe, fine tannins. They drink well young and age brilliantly. Like most of the greatest producers he takes the best of the old school and incorporates the best of the new.
Tasting note: The incredibly steep Valmaggiore is one of Piemonte's most visually stunning vineyards. Its sandy, chalky soils gift a remarkably perfumed and elegant expression of Nebbiolo, completely different to the style of wine produced from this variety in the more clay rich Barolo and Barbaresco areas. Fermented and aged for 12 months in old French oak barrels, this is truly a superb Valmaggiore. It's a sublimely aromatic wine brimming with raspberry, grenadine, dried rose, and freshly roasted spice notes. In the mouth it's super pretty, delicate and fine, with Pinot-like weight and tannins. It's very precise and long with flavours fanning out beautifully on the finish.

Production: Each day's picking was vinified separately. After destemming and light crushing, must is "sealed" with CO2 for gentle warm maceration of approximately a day. Alcoholic fermentation begins about 24-36 hours later from native wild yeasts only.
Malo-lactic fermentation in used French oak tonneaux of 500 liters, immediately following the alcoholic fermentation. No new casks are ever used for this wine to preserve the delicay and elegance of the wine.
Aging for 12 months in the same tonneaux of 500 litres used for the malolactic fermentation. After bottling, it is held for 9 months in bottle before release.
