Producer: Fattoria Lucignano

Grape: Trebbiano 80%, Malvasia 20%

Pronunciation: ‘loo-chin-yan-oh’

Region: Tuscany

Zone: DOC of Vin Santo del Chianti

Producer Info:

One of the most imposing, classical Chianti properties, just south of Florence, has been meticulously restored by Gerd and Stephan Schue. It is the complete Tuscan estate with olive oil, a great restaurant (Solissimo) and other crafts, to complement compelling and unusually rich reds and authentic Vin Santo from Chianti Colli Fiorentini the ‘Hills of Florence’

Tasting note: Lucignano Vin Santo is very trad, with the must of partially dried grapes (Trebbiano & Malvasia) sealed in small barrels (caratelli) for 8 years to complete a long fermentation and maturation. This emerges a golden liqueur of toffee, marmalade and almond notes, with a long, tingling, savoury finish. Just released, this is a classic.

Growing System: Cordon

Soil Composition: Medium textured, rich in gravel and clay

Production: The grapes are carefully selected and harvested at the end of September. The clusters are dried on mats till December/January in order to reach a sugar concentration of 380 grams/litre minimum. Soft pressing. The must is racked into small oak barrels (capacity 200 litres). Barrels are filled by 75% and sealed as soon as the fermentation starts. "Madre" (yeast sediment form previous vintages) of the "Fattoria di Lucignano" is left in the barrels. The barrels are opened after approximately 8 years of maturation.
