Castell-in Villa is one of the most historic estates in Chianti Classico Princess Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa and her husband found the property in 1967 and purchased it the following year. Initially, Princess Coralia and her husband thought they would make wine for fun. Princess Coralia's father, a Greek aristocrat, demurred at the thought of his daughter becoming a peasant. At the time, there was just one hectare under vine, but planting began in earnest in 1968 following the suggestions of the Chianti Classico Consorzio, which included white grapes that ended up being used for the first vintages. This tasting covered a number of vintages of the flagship Chianti Classico Riserva going back to the inaugural 1971.
Tasting note: Unrecognisable from Chianti of a decade, or more, ago! Not a new world, cloaked in French varieties and oak, but dark, deep Tuscan wine. This is primarily, plummy-purple, with some cherry notes, and a layered palate cut through by sangiovese’s crisp acid thing.
Growing System: Guyot
Soil Composition: Alluvial soil with pebbles and a mixture of lime, clay and sand.
Production: The Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva is made of Sangiovese grapes entirely from our best vineyards. The wine is blended and aged in oaks for 2-3 years. The wine ages very well and good vintages should be at their peak at an age of 6-15 years.
Alcohol (%) 13%
